Online self-help for Paruresis

WeMingo is a self-help program that helps you overcome your paruresis.

Supported by the European Social Fund (2016-2017)
Developed in collaboration with psychologists

What is WeMingo?

Are you constantly stressed because of your "shy bladder"? Are you also missing out on life and yet, not really doing anything against the problem? Many paruretics find themselves in this exact situation.

The WeMingo self-help program offers you a plan, to take action. It guides you through the essential steps of recovery and helps you to keep at it. Over the course of several weeks, you will get to know techniques that help you reduce your anxiety and live a free life.

Who is behind WeMingo?

Hi, my name's Johannes and I have developed WeMingo based on my own history with paruresis. I'm not a paruresis "guru" and don't aspire to be one. I want you to know that you can improve. My goal with WeMingo is to provide you with guidance and structure throughout the initial steps of recovery.

You can find more about me and WeMingo here.

How does WeMingo help me?

WeMingo is based on proven concepts from cognitive behavioral therapy, to enable lasting improvements.

In the modules you will learn to...

  • Understand what exactly happens when you “lock up” and what that means for recovery
  • Identify avoidance behavior that reinforces your anxiety (e.g. drinking less at parties or taking detours to get to a “safe” bathroom)
  • Stop constant worries by structuring your thoughts through expressive writing
  • Form an actionable plan that motivates you to challenge your fear rather than trying to ignore it
  • Identify and shut down common thinking errors that distort your perception
  • Overpower the overly negative automatic thoughts that arise whenever you are about to visit a bathroom
  • Overcome your anxiety by carefully confronting it
  • Steer clear of safety behavior that might undermine your gradual exposure practice

Frequently asked questions

No, WeMingo is merely an addition to the existing treatment options. I list additional contact persons and resources at the end of the program, if you should feel like you need further support.

WeMingo is not a substitute for the personal consultation, examination, diagnosis and therapy by a therapist or doctor. In fact, I recommend to undergo a professional medical screening by a urologist in order to rule out physical causes of your urination difficulties.

Yes! The efficacy of online interventions has been proven for a broad spectrum of mental illnesses and anxiety disorders in a variety of scientific studies.

Some key insights from relevant research:

  • mean treatment effects of online therapy across all disorders and forms of intervention is medium to large (Spek et al., 2007)
  • therapeutic effects achieved are comparable to those of traditional psychotherapy (Andersson et al, 2014)
  • online interventions can be highly effective in the treatment of social anxiety disorders (Berger et al., 2009)

I know there are a questionable products and services out there that promise you "instant results".

Here are a few things that I would like you to know:

  • I'm putting my full name and personal story to the project (read more about it on About WeMingo)
  • I have been awarded with a public grant to support my work on WeMingo. The "Berlin Startup Scholarship" was financed by the Senate of Berlin and the European Social Fund. You can find the official announcement here .
  • I have created the program in collaboration with online therapy experts from Freie Universität Berlin
  • The program has been reviewed by several practicing clinical psychologists that have contributed extensive feedback
  • I'm not promising "a cure in 7 days". I know from personal experience that it takes time to overcome habits and fears that have formed for years or even decades. WeMingo does guide you through the initial steps of recovery and does set you up for sustainable improvements. But I'm not making unworldly claims that don't hold up in real life.
